# CHAPTER 2
# Eye for Detail
When it comes to Photoshop Elements, your job is to use all the tools available to you to create strong images that enhance the story of your subject. Just as we’ve done in every chapter in this book, we’ll introduce some new and exciting new ways to use and manipulate images. At this point, we’re back to basics.
You probably have an understanding of the basics of image editing and know how to quickly change a color, crop an image, adjust overall image brightness and contrast, or even add a whole new photo to a previous image. We’ll be taking all of those well-known elements of image editing and examining them through a new lens in this chapter.
In this chapter, we’ll start with a look at some basic editing options, including histograms, in the context of one image editing technique: dust removal. We’ll then demonstrate a very simple but incredibly effective editing technique: adding a glowing background. After some fun with types of image file, we’ll turn to one of the main focal points of this book, your camera, in the section “Light and Color.” You’ll discover how to choose and use different light sources and determine the color of light on a subject. We’ll also look at the use of color in images and how to translate that color into color adjustments.
# **Histograms: Myths, Fallacies, and Realities**
The histogram is one of the most useful editing tools in Photoshop Elements. The histogram is a graph that graphically represents the brightness of the image when it is displayed on your computer. It does this by showing the brightness of the pixels in an image displayed on a computer screen. Figure 2-1 shows a histogram from an image that was saved from a digital camera. You can zoom in on the histogram to view details.

The Pen Tool allows you to draw paths with a brush or stylus. This tool is useful for drawing lines, curves, and fills, as well as creating masking, text effects and more.
Various other tools such as the Twirl, Wave, Camera, Sharpen, Soften, Refine Edge, Healing Brush, Color Adjust, and Gradient Mesh Tools help in specific tasks, and can be found under the Effects menu in the Tool Palette.
Also, the Blur and Grain tools allow for a subtle blurring or graininess to your images, and can be found in the Filters menu.
Effects
Photoshop effects are used to add various visual effects to images, such as a vignette or gradient to simulate film type of effects. Photoshop effects can be applied to any image, although some effects may require adjustments to the overall image and or mask.
The Basics
The basic design of the Photoshop window consists of the workspace where the images are manipulated, and a collection of tools and menus that are displayed in the workspace below.
Once an image is loaded into the workspace, the main tools, located on the left side of the workspace, allow you to manipulate it.
Photoshop 9 has what is considered to be the most advanced version of layers, or so-called “raster” layers. This version of layers give you much more options and control over your images. Layers are one of the most widely used features of Photoshop.
In addition to layers, the program also supports raster layers, which are also commonly referred to as “pixel-based” layers. The pixel-based layers are generated by the computer, and are considered to be the standard method of layer manipulation, while the raster-based layers are created by users in the past.
Once you open an image in the workspace, it appears on the left side of the workspace, along with the tools and menus. The three main tools are the Lasso, Selection Brush, and Eraser. Layers are displayed in the workspace, and are represented by the four-headed arrow to the right of the tool box.
There are a total of three main tool bars. One is a top tool bar with the brush, eraser, stamp and clone tools. The bottom toolbar is a toolbox. In addition to tools and menus, it also displays a preview of the image in the workspace.

Plasma fibrinogen concentration and coagulation factor VIII and IX: stability characteristics after continuous venovenous hemofiltration (CVVH).
Patients receiving continuous venovenous hemofiltration (CVVH) are at risk of bleeding from disturbances in hemostasis. In patients receiving CVVH, the bleeding risk cannot be evaluated by routine laboratory analyses because of dialysate-induced alterations. The aim of this study was to determine the validity of plasma fibrinogen, factor VIII (FVIII) and factor IX (FIX) concentrations measured before and after the dialysis period. Prospective study. Tertiary care university hospital. Patients (n=12) undergoing CVVH treatment. Blood samples were collected before and after CVVH from the vascular access and immediately after the dialysis period. The dialysis fluid was collected from the dialyser. In addition, blood samples were collected at the start and end of the dialysis session. Plasma fibrinogen, FVIII and FIX levels were measured by routine methods. Plasma fibrinogen and FVIII levels were significantly reduced immediately after the dialysis period compared to the pre-dialysis period. Fibrinogen and FVIII levels were not influenced by the collection of the blood or the dialysate samples. A significant positive correlation was demonstrated between plasma fibrinogen and FVIII levels. The in vitro effects of CVVH on plasma fibrinogen, FVIII and FIX levels are not clinically relevant.
