The sound is not only distorted, but suddenly the entire transduction process reverses and the open circuit condition is reached.

At this point the difference between gain and distortion in the output signal is so small that it’s hard to distinguish the two. Distortion is then just a confusion of sound.
When distortion is caused by a need for higher harmonics, the sound is abruptly saturated which makes the harmonics disappear and they are very visible. Saturation may be the cause of the loud hum of distortion.

If you drive the amp into soft clipping
This was formerly the end point for modern amplifiers, and is still used by some of them. It is as tight as you can get, and very loud, but very pure, if you can understand what this means, because:

The linearity is very high
No noise floor at all (ideal)
Impossible to measure at all
Impossible to distort at all

The amp is still able to create harmonics out of the distortion, so you have to follow some technical instructions to get a consistent distorted sound.

The output tube is unbalanced to ground
This is a surprisingly common, even amongst high-quality amps, because it makes it easier to use a pedal effect.
Transimpedance amplifiers use a tube as a switch, a source follower transconductor, and a low-noise buffer. The tube switch (or a relay) connects the output of the amplifier to ground.
The switch could be a normal single-element valve that has a low-impedance path between the cathode and the anode.
This behaviour requires the amplifier to be driven into clipping for the tube to have any chance of operating.

Balanced amplifiers use the two-in-one base-emitter follower configuration, the output of which is directly fed to a transimpedance amplifier, to boost low-level signals and buffer distortion. The amplifier is usually driven into oscillation to produce the clipping distortion.

You can change the character of the overdrive or distortion depending on how far you push it.

The boost takes the output of the amp and multiplies it by a factor of 1+X.
X is equal to the value you set in the boost control (from -10 to +10).
So when you put the gain at 10, it multiplies the output signal by 11.
The only way to raise the volume is by increasing the input volume.
When the input volume is at 100% (and the output volume set at 0%), you have infinite gain.

If you keep boosting the input volume and let the amp go into distortion, you get a distorted sound with a boosted volume – but the sound quality isn’t great.

How the gain stage works:
The gain stage of the amp is made up of two components:

The gain of the tube that modulates the signal into the amplifier input.
The amplification power of the amplifier.

When you put the gain at 10, both components are multiplied by 10.
The overall gain is 20.
The main problem with the amp is how to make an amplifier that lets you overclock the power amp tube (boost the gain to go into distortion) but doesn’t blow the tube up.
The answer is to use a power tube with a greater current rating than the tube that is used in the gain stage.
You’d have a gain of 100 (10 * 10), which is very easy to modulate in to the amplified signal.
Of course this just pushes the tube that way.
You could also lower the gain at the output and feed the amplified signal to the gain stage, and just use more power.

To find out the value of the tube that modulates the input signal with the amplifier, you would need to use a scope and measure what it takes to get the desired distortion.
From experience, it takes a tube with an impedance of something like 150 ohms (plate resistance).
If you find that, you could set the amp for 5x the plate resistance.
This should give you a round gain of 100.

If you set the gain to 10x (100 times greater than the 100 ohm), you should be able to achieve your distortion.
Of course you might not be able to find a Tungsten or CR-124 tube to be able to achieve that, but if you do, go ahead and give it a try.

When cranked, valve amps distort cleanly. That is, there’s no audible
coloration at all…just hard, full-blooded sound. But with a slight
turn of the volume control, these amps can create a distorted, or
“saturating” sound, where it gets to the point where there are only
two different pitches that the amplifier is hearing…one for quiet and
one for loud.

The best coloration I’ve heard from a modern tube amp was on an amp I used in my Ampeg V B4 head. The amp was discontinued but I had a guy recreate it for me. I think it was a combo of the tubes it was made from and a dude who knew what he was doing. If I heard that amp right before my Ampeg amp it was like an air hum. The sound was warm, roomy, and fat sounding. I think most of the time I left the VB4 off because the amp sounded just like mine. I also love my practice amp which sounds like a factory amp and I’ve had a few and they sound great until you start pushing them around. Modern tube amps are too efficient to be pushed as is.
Most expensive tubes on the market are made with higher voltages than their most respected predecessors. And if the tube is only going to last 6 months to a year then going with the highest voltage tube for $3 is a very good move.
