the best feature of kontakt is that it’s easy to use. you don’t need to fumble around with the instrument controls and knobs in order to get the desired sound. for example, the shaker sounds great straight off the bat. it can be a little quiet for some small pads, but that’s a minor niggle. it’s a whole lot easier to play the shaker on the fly than to wait for the browser to start the download. this works particularly well with keys. if you want more than one sound – say, one for the bass and one for the top end – you can load them into separate sections and have them switch between them. this is better than having to switch between channels in the browser and it does save having to download two files. but the best thing about kontakt is that once you’ve downloaded the fomd, you can then listen to the samples straight from within the program. this feature is great for auditioning the sounds. the sounds also come with standard notation and this is something that’s not available with most other vst and au instruments. however, there are a number of limitations here. first, you can’t drop the sound into a new track so you have to add it to a track that already has a sound in – though you can rename them.
the interface is smooth, but it is no easy matter to navigate. the zooming can be a bit clumsy when you are trying to apply a filter and add effects. however, all of this is exacerbated by the fact that there are no music controls. for example, you can’t fiddle with the pitch when you’re zooming. this might be ok for some people but most people just want to hear the sound. unfortunately, that’s not possible with this kontakt instrument – so it’s a bit of a miss

there are two modes: ‘theory’, which is the traditional preset preset, and ‘jam’, which is the default while in play mode. the latter is really strange and has no effect i could see. i tried disabling both but it didn’t make any difference. i suspect that the jam mode is effectively a b3 mode where you are given full melody control (all knobs) and the sample libraries are repeated after each break. i don’t really like this since i would like to read and learn from the guitar, more than play random notes at random times.
the song “vishwaas” from ‘where do you go?’, included in the collection, is a satisfying way to end the presentation, and is just the sort of song that i enjoy playing. the 40-odd notes of the song use all three instruments and is a good way to end the demonstration. in fact, i suspect it is a good representation of swarplug in general.
