realistically, this was one of the first games released on a cd-rom and not before ibm and lotus started to get into the game of pushing games into consumers hands. this game was only made for a price of 48 dollars, and was made to get people into the cd-rom market.
myst iv and uru online are very much products of their respective times, though, and while it’s pleasant to marvel at the quality of those creations, it’s hard to ignore the damaging reliance they have on cheats and mods in a fully-fledged sequel. sure, it’s done with tongue in cheek, but it’s still a gaping reflection of the times, and if the solution was this ‘hack pack’ for uru, was the more recent ‘nvd’ equivalent for myst? alas, no, thankfully, but for anyone who wishes uru had been better received instead of forgotten, it’s still worth a trip back through the mist.
most of you who follow me on twitter will know that i’m an advocate of myst games in general. most of you won’t know that i’m a big fan of uru, and while i rarely engage with other players on it, i do always enjoy chatting to enthusiasts about the game’s development and some of the things that went down. but since i don’t play it myself, and generally shy away from mmos, i had no idea how often the game’s servers crashed, or how little server bandwidth they were designed for, nor how the devs managed to suggest some deliberately awful stats for population: about 2000 players at a time – but in single figures – in the peak month of october. it’s no wonder people don’t play it!
so while i’m disappointed the last few years have seen the once-mighty uru online reduced to an online museum of deleted content (read up the official site), you can have an incredibly useful time with the code itself in uru i’s crack – for now at least. if anyone has a clue what i’m on about, try this link . the download, and the crack, live in a treehouse, and while they’re not quite ready to put their last piece together quite yet, you can still get an entry point – even if it’s a more student-friendly one than it used to be (at least until the fall of 2013, i’m afraid).
