About the Multiplayer Engine:
Ludo Online uses a simple player and server architecture.
Players connect to the game via an internet connection. They are allocated a unique player number that they can use to communicate with other players. The Server-side then updates the game state and displays the outcome as the players roll their dice, and moves their pawns across the board.

About the Server-side
As mentioned above, the client connects to the server and the server updates the game state and sends out the game outcome. The server can be started manually or automatically. When a player finishes, the server sends the game outcome to that player. In the case of a human player, the server waits for the player to enter his/her scores.

Choose your difficulty. Ludo is easy, Medium, Hard or Extreme. Choose how many turns you want to play, the number of pawns you want to have at the beginning of the game and the number of squares you want to advance per pawn.

Select the desired location. You can select cities in the world.

If there’s one thing being an independent studio has taught me, it’s that you will inevitably find yourself a few years into a project, and it’s worthwhile taking a step back and asking whether you’re really doing what you love. This process was the most significant interruption to Ludo Online’s development life cycle; the project had been kicking around the office for literally the full length of Obsidian, many years of our time in relative unity with Bioware Austin. [Editor’s note: To be fair, our game was working on and off, and keeping Ludo alive was Obsidian’s bread and butter. Our adventure will continue next year with a brief break!]
Those of us who worked on it like to believe that Ludo Online was more than just a side project. On its own, it isn’t much to get excited about. Chess-like gameplay in a simple 2D environment. Dice. In a fairly generic medieval fantasy world with generic fantasy races, but many of which are distinctive and fun. Combat in a simplified form, where your characters’ life and death is determined by dice rolls. Definite potential for a community to form around it. All those things were the backbone of what made Ludo very special to our group, and very different, but the smallest element among them was the concept. But, to be fair, that concept was born at the same time as our other games: Bounds of Reason and Atlas.

The late ‘90s were a crucial period for the design and development of what would come to be known as “Jams,” video games that play table-top games on a small screen (usually a television). The first games were coming of age (Diablo!), then not long after, Nintendo experimented with role-playing games. The industry became aware of this back-and-forth, and along with Guitar Hero and Rock Band, game developers wanted in. Lots of game designers found themselves realizing that the table-top game was the best idea they’d had in ages, and started translating it to the screen. Ludo Online was one of those table-top games.
