camille rojas and sara higgs visit a vintage clothing store where they find a white fur coat and decide to wear it together. while wandering around the city, they meet a reporter named phelan and get a big scoop: camille’s parents are getting divorced. they also meet the reporter’s boyfriend patrick and the couple invites camille and sara to move in with them while things are still in limbo between camille’s parents. camille eventually brings her parents together again, but, then the reporter comes out as a lesbian and camille is forced to tell her father she’s gay. however, they still want to be together, and sara and camille move in with patrick and his new partner for a while. even though it isn’t “just for the moment”, the three of them seem to be happy together. but a small problem arises when the younger gay couple decides to move out. camille and sara just can’t understand why everyone else seems to be okay with this decision but they don’t want to tell their parents they’re gay either. sara is frustrated and depressed because she and camille just don’t know what to do.
shannon is a second-generation divorcee who has taken her sweet, young son owen to see a psychiatrist. dr. moretti has been dealing with many difficult cases and is wondering how to make time to deal with shannon. then owen begins acting very strangely and dr. moretti can find no explanation for this other than he’s entering puberty. he can’t believe shannon would willingly allow her son to go through such a difficult transition. he tells her he thinks it would be better if owen went through this alone. shannon takes him to a youth conference where owen says he likes dylan mcavoy, a boy in his class. when owen meets him later, he asks shannon if they could live together. shannon is unsure how to respond and just wants to take her son home. however, when owen is out playing again, she ends up in a car accident and is in a coma. still, she can’t imagine anyone taking care of owen. then, owen wins a contest and dr. moretti suggests that he not tell shannon because if it’s in the paper, people will associate it with “the boy that didn’t tell his mom he liked dylan.” the doctor says shannon would probably want to know that she had won. owen was very happy to tell shannon about the contest because he knew how she felt about someone winning something without telling her. she immediately takes him to the hospital, but shannon dies in the middle of the night. owen can’t sleep, and finally sits by her bedside and tells her that he’s gay too.
