hard mode the hack provides a new difficulty setting called hard mode (giving it the title of “hard” in the right-click menu). this changes the requirements for npcs, monsters, items and even the story itself. you can also turn on a difficulty indicator on the title screen, so you can see if you’re getting the game tough. it might be a bit too tough for a few people, but i personally found it fun.
party system the hack adds a new party system which is all a bit complicated. in the game menu, you can switch between a party, see who’s in it, and who’s not. this means you can have up to four party members in the game at once (with a maximum of six in the party). you can even set up specific parties for specific dungeons, or even for specific quests. the party system also has a unique system for leveling up, which i’ll discuss later on.
battles the hack has a huge amount of battles, with one of the largest being the zenera’s castle battles. there are a number of special rules for this battle, though, and this can be to your advantage or disadvantage. for example, it is possible to hit enemies several times with a single attack, which can be useful if you’re rushing to a boss, or just want to get rid of some weak enemies quickly.
levels the hack gives you the ability to level your characters to any level you want. this is done automatically whenever the battle changes, and you’ll see the amount of exp you’ve gained when you switch to a new party member.
+ a new town you can now make a town and populate it with different npcs. the shops are all unique to the town you create and there’s even a casino for when you can’t be bothered with your work. if you get bored enough, you can even go to a different town to see what they’re doing. there’s a myriad of different things to do here, so you’re not just restricted to the main quest. as you’d expect, this can be a bit more tedious than the main quest, but it’s certainly a worthwhile addition to the game.
