Cream Lemon – Escalation – Die Liebe
There were a few things in this special that really made it stand out. Firstly, there was a constant reminder that it was parody, any time Tak or Kurone made a remark that seemed too normal, overly played on the cliché in question or used humorously as normal. There was also the titular Cream Lemon. Besides its constant mentions as a sexual object, it is constantly named as the heroine, her name is spoken as Oyuki finally watches it as a person (with no animation), her other friends call her by name and her self heart breaks whenever she hears the word.
Additionally, there is far more of an emphasis on character interactions, starting with the animation and ending with the character development. The story itself doesn’t change much, except that Naomis sexuality is more clearly defined and a large chunk of the plot involves her coming to terms with her sexuality. Also, in this it is very clear that for the most part, the story is simply taking place because of continuity between Escalation and Strawberry Panic. Naomis friends and classmates are given development that, for the most part, is too good to be true. They are too much alike, simply being the perfect friends.
This doesn’t make it bad by any means. But with the stories base in the OAV series, they are hard to tell the exact purpose of things. This is most notable in Rie. Her first scene with Naomis in Strawberry Panic is completely different than that in Escalation, with Rie simply being given a name without background story, leaving the viewer to remember her as the “key love interest”.
We have seen that Ostinato no Kansatsu is a pastiche of Escalation and I think its pretty clear that this is a pastiche of Strawberry Panic (and that its a pastiche that predates Strawberry Panic!).
In my tutanota I have a folder named Escalation and its full of commentaries on the series, weavings of the concepts from theory that I think Oyukis teacher taught her, sample scripts, scripts featuring characters before the original characters were created, plot analyses and much much more. So if anyone doubts me, I suggest you have a look at the folder.
In all of this reading I have picked up a few insights about a few things. The major one is that Escalation is a pastiche of Strawberry Panic. Its second, more minor insight is that it is slightly less historical than Marimite and slightly more historical than Strawberry Panic. Which means that despite having a major lesbian relationship and the characters all having classes together that are run by the very same person; despite the fact that I choose to link them all to Escalation; I think that the first two have less of a direct relationship to Escalation than the third one. Its third insight is that the sheen that Ryohei wears on his head is very likely to have originated in Escalation; as is the fact that he grew it back! (And he keeps it very close to his head, never allowing it to grow hair or a beard.)
Its fourth insight is that they are all, in their way, very Escalation wannabes. They are all very ambitious for popularity and praise, very reflexive, and are very aware of the trend in the 80s for ‘new wave’ YA schoolgirl series. Now, if all of these wannabes all place in a circle, then the centre of that circle is Escalation. The centre of the Escalation circle is also its most problematic and its most difficult to parody. Both Marimite and Strawberry Panic are far too recent for Oyukis earlier characters to have a good parody of. For them it would have to come from one of Escalations direct precursors. But this is not actually a problem, I mean why not pick these precursors? Why not take stories from the 90s that feature a high school girl in a world that already existed and change it to the present? This is why we have the 30s series Ultra Jikkuu no Densetsu, which has a one story arc where we have our main character growing a mane of hair on her head. It is very interesting that this parallels the growth of Ryohei’s hair.
