surely after so long, ea would’ve given criterion the chance to make burnout again, and now that we know the studio is working on rage 2 we knew it would have to be a top priority. so it comes as no surprise that ea decided to strike while the iron is hot and bring back criterion for a new burnout. of course, there were some complaints. not only were some people upset about how the studio was moved to battlefront before burnout, but they were also upset about how the studio was acquired by ea in the first place. rumors of the studio being at the point of bankruptcy were widely circulated, and ea’s acquisition of criterion for a large sum of money was sure to leave some people with a sour taste in their mouth. that, and the fact that need for speed has had some rough patches, didn’t leave many people feeling like another burnout was all that necessary. of course, people will always be fans of the series, and nobody can blame them for that, but there is always a risk of putting the cart before the horse.
however, people are pleasantly surprised. of course, i’m one of them. criterion was working on rage 2 for a long time, but we still didn’t know exactly what was going to happen. i was actually a bit worried that the studio was going to be dissolved and everything would be downsized to battlefront or some other project. however, that doesn’t appear to be the case and everyone is still working on rage 2, and i’m more than happy to see them continue to do so. as for criterion’s future, it looks like burnout paradise will be the first and only game they work on, but that doesn’t necessarily mean we will see burnout in the future. it’s possible that we will see a new studio create their own spinoff game, but it is also possible that criterion will work on other projects. if they were to move on to battlefront it wouldn’t be surprising, and i’m glad to see that people aren’t so upset that they decided to bring back burnout again.
