In response to the fan demand we are now able to implement pike-and-shot warfare into Total War. For the details of what exactly works and what doesnt, check the section on the tactics page below. For now we assume you know what we mean.

The Pike formations command which determines the order of pike squares is a bit of a mystery to me, but it most likely affects at least all pike squares, the Orientation command controls their movement, and it presumably controls the Turn command. The Enemy count display command is also probably dependent on the pike squares. There is also a Horse count command, which is definetely a problem for me with the Total War: Warhammer mod due to that very horse.

The front rank formation (as infantry formations are called in the game) of infantry in Total War: Warhammer is the phalanx formation, a line of heavily armed foot soldiers (it can also have some units of crossbowmen with it) so that they can be packed together in the best effective order to punch into enemy lines. As such, one of the most valuable things the phalanx formation does is provide range information to the front ranks, who can determine whether it is safe to attack or not and who determine if enemies are close enough to hit. A phalanx formation becomes very effective at dealing with enemy formations of similar or lesser value that are spread out (such as a mixed line), because the front and rear ranks can hit them from both flanks, while the back ranks are too far from the front ranks to do that (or in order to avoid damaging their own ranks).

Anyways, that doesnt excuse the original editions overrepresentation of infantry: they might have had a LOT of men, but they didnt have a lot of elite troops, and if you were on the losing side, your destruction was likely to be more a function of your use of your own elite than of the number of your enemies. So Attila, who was generally both evil and at least a bit successful, might have had, say, 30,000 men, but probably only a few thousand elite troops (scythed spearmen, perhaps, or crossbowmen), and the rest of the men who got killed were more often than not their own men fighting to defend their villages and farms from the marauding Huns, not the overmatched defenders of a castle on a barren peak.
