The Ordovician was a time of extreme ecological and geologic upheaval. The continents had moved, Earth’s mantle had been stripped to its surface, and the biosphere had established the first large-scale patterns of limits on life. As communities of marine benthos colonized new biomes, they recorded the new biotic/abiotic limits that now controlled them. The end-Ordovician mass extinction, however, represents the largest such extinction to date, with an estimated ∼14 and 52% of marine and terrestrial species lost ( Loest et al. 2010 ; Scarff et al. 2011 ). This review focuses on the marine bivalves. The extinction of these groups—which alone lost a third of their known species—is a world-scale event. Such events demonstrate that there are ecological limits to ecological dominance and, despite the breadth of biodiversity currently evident in the land-riparian biomes, marine biomes are perhaps even more restricted in their potential for consistently high biodiversity ( Chapman 1995 ).
